1985年8月-1992年11月 中国社会科学院农村发展研究所研究人员、农村发展理论研究室负责人 (其间:1986年10月-1989年8月在中国社会科学院研究生院读博士学位;1988年10月评为副研究员)

中共十七大、十八大代表;第十一届全国人大代表、全国人大常委会委员、农业与农村委员会委员,曾在国外多所大学任访问学者。兼任中国人口学会副会长、全球变化人文因素国际项目中国委员会副主席、中华全国青年社会科学工作者联谊会副会长、农业部软科学委员会委员、国家人口和计划生育委员会专家工作委员会委员、国家规划专家委员会委员、内蒙古自治区等一些省市顾问。《中国社会科学》、《经济研究》等刊物编委,《中国人口科学》杂志主编;国内外多家著名杂志审稿人。中国经济50人论坛成员。曾先后多次担任世界银行、亚洲开发银行、联合国开发计划署、经济合作与发展组织、国际劳工组织等国际组织项目顾问。担任美国科学院项目顾问、2009年《人类发展报告》顾问委员会成员、世界经济论坛人口理事会成员、英国皇家学会人与地球工作组成员、国际经济学会第16届世界大会筹委会委员、分会主持人。

社会荣誉

20世纪90年代以来分别获得“做出突出贡献的中国博士学位获得者”、国家级“有突出贡献的中青年专家”、出国留学人员杰出成就奖等表彰。近年获第二届张培刚发展经济学优秀成果奖;第四届中国发展百人奖;第四届中国农村发展研究奖。被评选为“影响新中国60年经济建设的100位经济学家”之一
